As the crisis in Darfur deepens, Calvert believes it has both a responsibility and an opportunity to act. We are committed to lending our name, voice, and expertise to the growing divestment movement, even though our human rights criteria have already ensured that companies in our own portfolios are not currently subject to targeted divestment.
The Sudan Divestment Task Force (SDTF), a project of the Genocide Intervention Network, is at the forefront of the global divestment movement. The Save Darfur Coalition (SDC) represents over 170 faith-based, advocacy, and humanitarian organizations in an effort to raise public awareness about the continuing genocide in Darfur and to mobilize a unified response to the atrocities that threaten the lives of millions of people. These two organizations are leaders in the campaign to end the genocide and humanitarian crisis in Darfur.
Calvert has formed a partnership with the SDTF and SDC to provide analytical and advocacy support at this critical time, as the situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate and the divestment movement gains traction. Several of Calvert's social research analysts with particular expertise in human rights and Indigenous Peoples' rights will support the work of the SDTF on a continuing basis. Our analytical expertise is particularly well-suited to addressing the very specific issues that the SDTF targeted divestment criteria seek to identify.
In order to leverage our efforts and strengthen support for this movement, we are also prepared to take advantage of Calvert's close relationships with other socially responsible investors, advocacy NGOs, and public officials. These efforts may include sign-on letters, discussions with other financial services companies, and promotion of certain public policy initiatives.
