Water Investing? Dive into Calvert's New App!
Amid Growing Climate and Drought Impacts, Sustainable Investing Leader Calvert Launches 1st Water Investing App; New Push to Increase Awareness of Water Challenges, Investment Opportunities
In a first for the world of sustainable and responsible investing (SRI), Calvert Investments is making available to investors and financial advisors the Calvert Water Investing App.
With ambitious goals for educating individuals and financial professionals about the global water crisis, the interactive and information-rich Calvert Water Investing App is available to download on both Apple and Android mobile devices.
With rising concerns about climate change, the spread of drought conditions, and concerns about inadequate or crumbling water infrastructure, interest is growing in water as an investing opportunity. As explained in a new Calvert Investments’ white paper, “Quenching the World’s Thirst for Water,” water-related infrastructure alone will require $22 trillion globally over the next two decades.
Calvert Vice President of Marketing, Matt Alsted said: “Water is the sustainability issue that transcends social values. It’s in the press every day and affects everyone. Yet investors are only beginning to recognize the linkages between water sustainability, economic value, and the investment opportunity in companies creating innovative water product and service solutions. The Calvert Water Investing App is one part of our strategy to inform, engage, and activate relationships between investors and their financial advisors in the water theme. For us, success is about not only helping clients recognize investment opportunities but also enabling clients to be part of the solution to key sustainability challenges.”
The first-of-its-kind app is a logical next step for Calvert Investments, home in recent decades to many of the most important innovations in SRI. One example of Calvert’s leadership: the Calvert Global Water Fund (CFWAX) was launched on September 30, 2008, in response to challenges and opportunities presented by the global water crisis. The fund now has $285 million in assets under management and boasts a solid performance record.
The Calvert Water Investing App features the following five key elements:
- “The Daily Drip”–a roundup of weekly news about water-related issues of interest to investors and financial advisors.
- “Play”–allows users to “submerge” and interact with their own photos.
- “Learn”–the place to get up to speed on the facts about global water challenges, environmental impacts and view a short water film.
- “Views”–expert commentary and analysis from Calvert on key water issues, including daily tweets from Calvert water analysts
- “Invest”–facts and performance updates about the Calvert Global Water Fund and the portfolio management team.
The Calvert Global Water Fund (CFWAX) has been a solid performer in its first five years. The average annual total returns for A shares at net asset value (NAV) for the period ending September 30, 2013 are: 17.23 percent (year to date); 25.81 percent (one year); 14.62 percent (three years); and 9.47 percent (since inception). This compares to the Lipper Global Natural Resources Fund Index for the same periods as follows: 9.43 percent; 9.36 percent; 3.29 percent; and 2.12 percent. (Sources: Calvert Investments and Lipper.)

Investment return and principal value will fluctuate so that an investor’s shares, when redeemed, may be worth more or less than their original cost. Returns for periods of less than one-year are not annualized.
Investment in mutual funds involves risk, including possible loss of principal invested. By concentrating its investments in the water sector, the Fund is subject to the risk that a downturn in the water-related sector would impact the Fund more than a fund that does not concentrate in this industry, and the Fund therefore may be more volatile than a typical mutual fund. In addition, foreign investments generally involve greater risks than U.S. investments, including political and economic risks and the risk of currency fluctuations.
