Calvert Investments at Rio+20

Barbara Krumsiek, President and CEO of Calvert Investments will participate in several panels at the upcoming Rio+20 conference. She will share her perspective on issues ranging from the business case for the green economy to the linkages between gender equality and sustainable development.

June 16: Board Adoption and Oversight of Sustainability

Rio Plus 20Calvert will join leading companies to discuss the important role of the board of directors in defining sustainability priorities for a company. This panel will cover the various approaches to Board oversight of sustainability, the importance of diversity on the Board, and emerging Board practices such as sustainability education and linking executive compensation to sustainability practices.

June 16: Launch of Natural Capital Declaration: Perspectives from Senior Executives

Calvert will join other signatories to announce the launch of the Natural Capital Declaration (NCD), which commits investment firms to integrate Earth's natural assets including soil, air, water, flora, and fauna to their evaluation of investments. As part of the discussion, we will emphasize how, as investors, we are still largely unable to account for potential risks from biodiversity loss and welcome the opportunity presented by the NCD to explore the integration of biodiversity and financial analysis as an industry.

June 17: The Business Case for the Green Economy

This session will explore the roles of the business community, government and finance sector in the transition to a green economy and highlight innovative efforts already underway. Calvert's views on what the profile of a sustainable company looks like and how sustainability can drive a business model will be presented. The session will also include a discussion regarding Calvert's views on sustainability as an investment opportunity and how such efforts can be integrated across global supply chains.

June 17: Social Enterprise and Impact Investing

Calvert will moderate a discussion on how directing capital to social enterprise can allow investors to achieve financial returns and reach new growth markets while simultaneously fostering socially beneficial impacts. The investor panel will discuss ideas to foster institutional interest in impact investing, including the necessary infrastructure improvements that the impact investing industry needs in order to generate further growth.

This panel will explore how business can maximize its contribution to sustainable development by prioritizing and integrating gender equality and women's empowerment as a key component of corporate sustainability and will highlight examples of concrete, innovative business approaches and practices in this area. Calvert will share its experience with the Calvert Women's Principles®, the first global code of corporate conduct focused on advancing, investing in, and empowering women and why we believe gender equality is a critical indicator of good management.
